AR PARTY

YEAH!

Every second grader met their AR goal for the second nine weeks and enjoyed our party.

We had the most fun eating cookies, drinking juice, and playing a variety of game board games.

BUG LADY

Once again we had a visit with the Bug Lady. She brought with her many fun, exciting, and scary creatures. As she brought out each critter she told facts about each animal.

Here are some pictures! YES there is a SNAKE!!! We were allowed to touch or pet each animal if she said it was safe.

We had a great time eating candy canes during the month of December but we also had fun doing science experiments.

One of our experiments was dissolving candy canes in various types of liquids to see which would dissolve the candy quicker. We used water, vinegar, lemon juice, cooking oil, 7-Up, and sugar water. It was exciting to see which dissolved quicker. Cooking oil did nothing to the candy cane! The 7-Up was the winner dissolving the candy the quickest.

The second experiment we tried was to see if we could get a candy canes to fizz or erupt. We all made a prediction whether the candy would blow up and erupt or fizz.

You should have seen the kids eyes pop out and hear their squeals as the candy cane fizzed.

Farm Bureau visits again

Karla Boone and Stacie Seiter visited the second grade classrooms to teach us another part of "Who Grew Our Soup?"

Mrs. Boone read the adorable book called, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar."

With the turn of each page the little caterpillar ate and ate more fruits, vegetables, and yes...some junk food! As every page turned, the little guy grew bigger and bigger. This is just like people. We need to eat the right foods that help us to grow big and strong. We can't go a single day without thanking a farmer or rancher who grew our food.

They let us build a hungry caterpillar. We glued pom poms to make our hungry caterpillar.

Pumpkin Pie in a Bag!

Second graders tried their hand at making pumpkin pie! This pie didn't require any baking. We just needed zip lock bags and the supplies.

In the first bag we worked as a team and crushed graham crackers that would be our crust.

In the second bag went milk and vanilla pudding that we squished together. Next step was adding the pumpkin and spices. When the spices were added, the room smelled yummy! Now came more squishing.

We poured the pies in our cups and had to wait until it was chilled.

Later that afternoon we enjoyed our pies.

We added whip cream and gobbled our creations!

Farm Bureau Visit

Each month Kim Douglas, with Farm Bureau, will be coming to our second grade classrooms. She first started teaching us about ranch and farm life with our field trip to the ranch. After such a wonderful day at the ranch, she wanted to visit and tell about crops that Kansas grows. During the month of October her visit was reading the book, "Who Grew My Soup!" Each month she will focus on different crops that Kansas grows that could be in our soup.

The November visit also brought Carol Ann Flock to our classroom with the story about pumpkins.

The book told of the history of pumpkins through the years. Pumpkins have lots of good nutrients that are good for our bodies.

The story told of three foods that are nicknamed "Three Sister Foods." Those foods were grown and eaten by the Pilgrims. Pumpkins, beans, and corn are the Three Sister foods.
